RECOVERING LOST DATA FROM A FAILED HARD DRIVE

Postby Idigau on Thu Oct 02, 2008 2:21 pm

I recently had a 400 Gb hard drive failure. It contained over 700 movies I shared in the hubs. I believe the problem was caused by the drive (a sata drive) generated too much heat even when using extra cooling fans for it. I converted it to an external device and then disconnected it and placed it in a zip lock plastic bag and placed it in the freezer overnight.

When I reconnected it and started it up I was able to recover some of the files to another drive until the drive warmed up again. I repeated the above routine and was able to recover more of the files.

My problem is now one of no place to put the files so I am in the process of recovering a few files at a time and converting them to DVD so when I am able to afford more hard drives I will then rip them back to the computer to share as avi files.

I hope others can use this information to recover lost files from failed hard drives

In the future I will not use sata drives due to the heat problem which has also caused erratic operation of the computer I use in the hubs.
